Two hundred kilobytes is a page count, not a quality setting

Exam boards, job portals and government forms in India and elsewhere often cap an upload at 200 KB. That is a hard ceiling: a 201 KB file is refused with no explanation. The figure is small enough that the real question is not how hard to compress but how many pages can fit at all, and this page answers that before you save.

On the Quality step, the planner puts a sample of your pages through the real writer in colour and again in grey, and turns the result into a count: how many pages of this kind fit in 200 KB each way, against how many your document has. If the answer is “three in colour, six in grey” and you have five pages, you know before writing anything that grey is the move.

Two worked examples. Press “Try six sample photos” above and the planner reads “about 32 KB a page in colour, 28 KB in grey: 6 pages fit in colour, 7 in grey”; saved, the six made a 6-page PDF of 189 KB with nothing re-encoded at all. From our own test set, three dense certificate photos (3024 × 4032 each) measured about 141 KB a page, so the planner said one page fits — and it was right: the three-page document stopped at 255 KB and said so, while one of the certificates alone, in grey, saved at 136 KB.

How the size is reached

  1. The resolution ceiling is set to 200 DPI. A phone photo carries far more than that across an A4 page, and pixels nobody can see are the bulk of the file.
  2. Grey is the next lever and sits first on the Quality step. For a page of text it removes most of what is left without making anything harder to read.
  3. Compression comes last, and only where it pays. The file is written, measured, and then only the pages that dominate its size are re-encoded, up to five passes, with a floor below which text stops being legible.

If the target cannot be met above that floor, the builder stops and says how close it came. A smaller file would exist, but nobody at the far end could read it. For other limits, the size-limited builder takes any figure you type, from 50 KB to 5 MB, and the guide to getting under 200 KB explains which lever to pull first and why.

Questions about JPG to PDF under 200 KB

How many pages fit in 200 KB?

It depends on the photos, so this page measures yours. Open the Quality step and the planner line reads something like “about 48 KB a page in colour, 27 KB in grey: 4 pages fit in colour, 7 in grey”. As a rough guide, a photographed text page at 200 DPI is 25 to 60 KB in grey and roughly twice that in colour.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The document is written, measured and rewritten inside this tab until it fits. Every pass happens on your device, and the photos are never sent anywhere — which also means nothing is spent from a metered data plan.

What does the PDF contain?

Your pages as images: no text layer, no file names, no camera or location data, and no title or author field. The receipt after saving lists the measured size against the 200 KB you asked for, and how many pages were redrawn to get there.

Will the portal accept the file?

This tool can only promise the figures: the file it hands you is under the size it reports, at the page size and resolution it reports. Portals also check things it cannot see, such as which document they expected, so read the rest of the portal's rules before uploading.

It still will not fit. What now?

Turn on grey if it is off, drop the ceiling from 200 to 150 DPI, or split the photos into two documents. The builder names the closest size it reached rather than writing an unreadable file to hit the number.
